How to Choose a Laptop or Notebook

Buying a laptop is like buying a car. There are all sorts of experts who will pin point the merits of each notebook, but it will be up to you if you are satisfied with one or another.

Like desktop computers, laptops need to have some functionality too. Here you will have to know what you actually have to do with your notebooks.

All keyed up

First thing to look at is the utility of a keyboard. The only way to assess this is in the shop. The keys may not be according to your style of typing and also a small keyboard is frustrating as well. It doesn’t matter if you type well. If the keyboard is not designed according to you fingers you will face problems in your working.

Screen test

Next thing to assess is the screen. Portable laptops use colored flat screens for the visual effects. Examining a screen will require you to check the response to the light. Almost all screens go blind in sunlight but some are better than others.

Mouse matters

Many laptops have not found a way to an effective functioning of the mouse. Some notebooks have a joystick in the middle of the keyboard while others have a touch sensitive pad, with a click button. The stick usually breaks while the touch sensitive box makes it difficult to navigate the cursor at the required spot. Hence, choose a laptop that has a port to use an ordinary mouse. But using a notebook with a mouse does reduce the advantage of portability.

Do you need the internet?

If you don’t, then you will be giving up lots of rewards of a laptop. But there are people who may not want to be contacted by their colleagues and search information on the move. However if you do need internet, you will also need to have a modem card. Modem cards looks like metal credit card that slides in the slot of the PC enabling you to connect to a common phone.

But make sure that you have a 56K modem which supports GSM so that you can connect to internet using a mobile phone via infra red or a lead. It will be better if you have a laptop with an infra red because it does not require a lead.

How fast does it need to be?

All PC’s are faster than laptops. The faster the laptops are, the more expensive they are. Settle for the fastest that you can afford, but you should be prepared for it to be slow.

Weight

This is one of the most important things to consider while choosing a laptop. You want a laptop to be light as it makes it easier to carry. The lighter the notebooks are, the more expensive they are. However it will be worthwhile to have a thin one if you can afford it.
